Doha:
The Qatar Olympic Academy has concluded the second semester lectures of the Diploma in Sports and Olympic Institutions Management in its sixteenth edition, accredited by the International Olympic Committee, Olympic Solidarity, and the International Olympic Academy. This semester focused on a central theme in management sciences: Strategic Management in Sports Organizations.

The lectures were delivered by Professor Mike Dugnan, lecturer at Paris 1 University and former President and Director of the Olympic Studies Centre in the United Kingdom at the University of Surrey. He presented advanced academic content that combined theoretical perspectives with practical applications in sports management, drawing on his extensive experience in developing Olympic studies and managing international sports institutions.

Professor Dugnan addressed several core topics that form the foundation of modern sports institution management. He began with Preparing for the Strategic Process, highlighting the importance of prior planning and establishing organizational frameworks that enable institutions to make informed decisions ensuring sustainability and growth. He stressed that the strategic success of any sports institution depends on a clear vision from the outset and the availability of accurate data to shape future directions.

In the section on Diagnosing the Environment of the Olympic Sports Institution, he analyzed internal and external factors influencing organizational performance, including economic, social, and technological variables, as well as international competition in the sports field. He explained that the ability to accurately assess this environment allows institutions to seize opportunities and effectively address challenges, thereby strengthening their position locally and globally.

The lectures also focused on Vision, Values, Mission, and Strategic Objectives. Professor Dugnan emphasized the importance of defining a clear institutional identity that reflects Olympic sports values and guides administrative work toward achieving measurable goals. He noted that a comprehensive strategic vision ensures harmony across departments and enhances overall performance efficiency.

Equally important was the theme of Action Plans, described as the executive link of strategy. He explained how to translate objectives into practical programs and initiatives, with clear resource allocation, timelines, and performance indicators. He stressed that the success of these plans depends on their realism, flexibility, and adaptability to change, while underscoring the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the implementation process.

The lectures concluded with Monitoring and Evaluation, a critical element in ensuring the achievement of strategic objectives. Professor Dugnan reviewed mechanisms for tracking performance and measuring results using modern scientific tools, reinforcing transparency and accountability within sports institutions. He explained that continuous evaluation enables course correction and performance improvement in line with international best practices.

This semester is part of the diploma program launched last April, with the participation of more than fifty male and female students from Qatar and abroad. The diverse professional backgrounds of participants highlight the Academy’s role as a leading regional center for sports education and development.

The program includes prominent sports figures from Qatar, the Gulf, and the Arab world, alongside administrators, coaches, and specialists, enriching classroom discussions and adding practical dimensions to the academic content. It also provides a distinguished platform for exchanging expertise and building professional networks that contribute to the development of the sports sector in the region.

The Diploma in Sports and Olympic Institutions Management aims to prepare qualified cadres capable of leading sports institutions according to the latest administrative methods, with a focus on Olympic values and global best practices. It is one of the Academy’s flagship educational initiatives, having produced successive cohorts of leaders who now hold influential positions in various sports bodies.

Through this program, the Qatar Olympic Academy is keen to attract renowned international experts to deliver advanced academic content that keeps pace with rapid changes in the sports world, particularly in management, marketing, and sports investment. The Academy also seeks to strengthen partnerships with international institutions to ensure its programs meet the highest academic and professional standards.

The conclusion of this semester marks another step forward for participants in completing the diploma requirements. Upcoming lectures and training activities will continue in the coming period, further refining participants’ skills and preparing them to meet the challenges of working in sports institutions at all levels.

Amid the significant growth of the sports sector in Qatar and the region, such educational programs play a vital role in supporting national and regional cadres, enhancing their capacity for innovation and strategic planning, and aligning with future ambitions while reinforcing sport’s role as a tool for sustainable development.

With this, the Qatar Olympic Academy reaffirms its commitment to supporting sports education and promoting Olympic culture through specialized programs that help build a new generation of sports leaders capable of achieving success and raising the profile of Arab sport on the international stage.
