Doha:
The Qatari Olympic Academy concluded last Thursday the activities of the sixth semester of the Olympic Sports Management Diploma program, titled "Organizing and Managing Sports Events," with the participation of more than thirty male and female students from within Qatar and abroad. The lectures for this semester lasted for three days, from September 17 to September 19.
This semester's lectures were delivered by Mr. Khalil Ibrahim Al-Jaber, the Executive Director of the Qatari Olympic Academy, who holds numerous international, continental, and local positions, including "Member of the International Aquatics Federation, Vice President of the Asian Swimming Federation, and President of the Qatari Swimming Federation."
He also held several positions in major championships and events, such as the Director of Sports Administration for the Asian Games – Doha 2006, as well as the Arab Games – Doha 2011, among other major championships and events in the country, the latest being the General Director of the World Aquatics Championships.
The lectures included several topics, starting with the speaker introducing the sporting event, its management, the types of events, and the classification of championships along with their technical and athletic levels.
The second axis was the stages of managing the sporting event before its launch, forming work teams, and distributing tasks, as well as presenting new ideas for preparing and organizing a major international sporting event that would be part of the comprehensive strategy of the sports organization. This aims to meet the strategic objectives of the Olympic sports organization, while being aware of the achievable goals and highlighting the risks involved in the organization process.
Then it moved on to the post-event phase of organizing the sporting event and the lessons learned from previous sporting events.
The second day's lecture included several topics on organizing major sporting events. The speaker addressed the importance of organizing the sporting event and the necessity of making the decision to either organize the event or not, as well as the benefits and risks involved in organizing the sporting event, and the key stages involved in event management.
He also reviewed the appropriate legal and practical framework for it and identified the necessary human resources to organize the event. Then, he discussed an illustrative example regarding the recruitment of volunteers, considering it a crucial issue for most events.
The lecturer also discussed the risks involved in organizing tournaments, events, and sports activities, as well as how to handle them and prepare alternative plans in case any of these obstacles or risks occur.
Mr. Khalil concluded by discussing the legacy of championships and sporting events, as well as the collective tournaments and ways to manage and benefit from the heritage of these championships, whether it be material, moral, or human.
It is worth mentioning that the final chapter of the Olympic Sports Management Diploma program will take place on October 15th, during which the students will present their graduation projects and presentations.
